Thank you for your interest in the Dublin Simon Community!
Volunteers are at the core of the Dublin Simon Community's work. They work alongside professional staff to deliver vital services to homeless women and men in our projects.
While Dublin Simon is well known for our nightly volunteer soup run, we also do a huge amount more which people don't know about. For 40 years, Dublin Simon has been providing real solutions to homelessness and its related issues. We have 13 projects across the city, each of these contributing uniquely to our overall aim - moving people out of homelessness.
There are many different services that volunteers contribute to, some of which are our fundraising, finance, treatment services, soup run, social club and settlement services.
Our Soup Run volunteers have been a familiar presence on the streets of Dublin for nearly 40 years. The first members of the Dublin Simon Community (students from UCD and TCD) offered fellowship to people experiencing homelessness in Dublin. The much appreciated practical comforts of a cup of warm soup and a sandwich are still a welcome and long-lived practice within the city of Dublin.
However, unlike days of past, there are now even more reasons to use this tool of engagement. Service users that avail of this service allow for trained staff and volunteers to use this 'tool of engagement' to encourage service users to come off the streets. It also allows for volunteers to collect essential statistical information which contributes to the overall Strategic Plan for the Dublin Simon Community.
There are many different essential services that DSC provides ranging from emergency shelters right through the 'Continuum of Care' cycle to DCTS, our Tenancy Sustainment Service.
Dublin Simon Tenancy Sustainment Service, with its volunteer network and in partnership with professionally trained staff, is working to break the cycle that leads to people sleeping rough by preventing them from becoming homeless in the first place.
Here in the Dublin Simon Community we have three types of volunteering opportunities:
